Choosing the right size
How to measure your feet
- Stand on a blank piece of paper.
- Draw an outline of your foot (you may want somebody to help you with this).
- Measure the length from the heel to the end of your longest toe.
- Check your result against the table below.
Ladies shoe conversion chart

Measure the width of your feet
- Use a soft tape measure, place your foot on the floor, and measure around the widest part of your foot including around your bunions.
- Take the measurement in millimetres.
- Then find your shoe size in the table below and follow the numbers in the table to the right of your shoe size to match it to the closest measurement of the width of your feet.
Most of our shoes can accommodate up to an WW (EEE) fitting across the widest part of the foot (please see the notes below on bunion severity and the suitability of our shoes).
Please email [email protected] if you are unsure about our sizing.

Our shoes are suitable for:
- Mild and moderate bunions on wide feet
- Large bunions on narrow and standard feet.
They are not suitable for:
- Severe bunions
- Large bunions on very wide feet
Please contact us if you need further information.
Choosing the correct shoe size is essential for comfort and functionality, especially when dealing with sensitive areas like bunions. Calla Shoes provides tailored guidance in determining the most suitable size for you. With measurements of your feet's length and circumference, we can better suggest the optimal shoe size. Should you need additional assistance, our customer service is experienced in advising based on individual foot specifications and will support you in making the best choice for your needs.
If you let us know your feet measurements (the width of the widest place on each of your feet, as measured around the bunion) along with the length of each foot in cm/mm and also send us a picture of your feet if you feel that this may help, we can help you determine whether our shoes will be suitable for your bunions. Please send any queries to [email protected]
Our trainers are only available in full sizes. They are quite wide fitting all around so our suggestion is, if you have a slender heel size down by half a size, if you have a wider heel size up. The length fitting difference is only around 8mm between full sizes.
Our styles vary between an EE and an EEE in the toe box and a standard D fit everywhere else.
Some styles are more generous than others so if you are unsure about your sizing you should email [email protected]
Once you have measured the width of your feet and used our guide to understand what width fitting you are, you can use the width filter on our product and collection pages to find out which styles are suitable for you.
Please note - our shoes are not suitable for severe bunions or hammer toes.
Please let us know at [email protected] if you need any assistance with sizing and measurements.

After care of the shoes
We want your shoes to last as long as possible so please read the following tips to help your shoes stay looking like new.
- We recommend you apply a waterproofing spray to protect suede and leather shoes from stains and water. If your shoes are made from suede, brush with a suede brush before and after the spray.
- If your suede shoes get a stain, use a cleaning mousse.
- If you get mud on them, let the mud dry overnight and brush it off with a stiff brush (eg a nail brush). If there is some remainder dirt left, wipe it off with a clean, damp cloth or use the suede eraser.
- In most cases, if your shoes get wet, they should be fine. Leave them to dry naturally, never by forced heat. In some cases, however, they can be left with water stains and colour fastness can not be guaranteed
- Use shoe trees or alternatively screwed up tissue paper in your shoes in between wearing when you can. This will keep the shape of the shoes, push out creases and absorb moisture from the lining.
- When packing your shoes for a trip use the dust bag provided.
If your shoes are rubbing at the heel we suggest using vaseline rubbed on your foot and on the shoe to reduce the friction between your foot and the shoe which causes rubbing. Of course you may not want to use vaseline on your new shoes so we would also advise buying a 'moleskin' felt pad for the back of the shoe and rubbing vaseline on that instead. You can also see our care guide for advice on stretching your shoes.
When you have bunions it is not generally recommended that you wear heels.
However, what we would say is that Calla heels are for those occasions when you absolutely need a beautiful pair of heels such as a wedding, a Christmas party or a fancy dinner date.
Take on board the following advice:
- If you're not used to wearing heels then try walking around the house in them before your special occasion to get used to the height and the weight on your toes
- Please remember when you're wearing your shoes for a special occasion, the pressure of your body weight will have put additional strain on the metatarsal joints where your bunion sits and prolonged use may cause some discomfort
- We recommend you use toe stretchers after wearing your heels to help stretch out and exercise your foot muscles and relieve any discomfort you might be feeling
- We don't recommend that you wear heels for every day use as your bunion may end up getting larger and more painful.
Otherwise, please enjoy your beautiful shoes!
Our shoes are made from very flexible, high quality leathers which will stretch and mould to your feet over time.
If you need additional room in your shoes you can try the following methods to help stretch out your shoes:
- Use a special shoe stretcher spray on the inside of the shoe where you want the additional volume. Wear your shoes as normal and the leather will stretch where the spray has been applied.
- Take your shoes to a cobblers who should have the correct instruments to stretch out your shoes
- You can buy your own shoe stretchers and follow the instructions that come with them, but take care you don't stretch them too far.
- There are specific bunion stretching implements that cobblers use that you can buy online.
- Put your shoes on with a pair of thick socks and use a hair dryer to carry out a short 10 second blast of hot air on the area that you want to be stretched out. Let the shoes cool down completely while wearing them and if they need further stretching then repeat the process again.
- Scrunch up damp newspaper and stuff inside your shoes. Leave to dry naturally (not under forced heat) and as the newspaper dries it will push the leather out.
As our shoes are handmade and using the highest quality materials they aren't 100% weather and waterproof. We highly recommend using a protect spray to help to protect your shoes from the elements. You can find them here: Shoe Accessories | Shoe care products | Calla Shoes

About Calla Shoes
Calla shoes was founded by Jennifer Bailey, a bunion sufferer and serial hunter of stylish shoes to wear that wouldn't squeeze and irritate her feet.
Jennifer understands the pain of not being able to find shoes to fit your feet better than anyone, having gone through it for the most of her life.
The business vision came together after she struggled immensely to find a suitable pair of shoes for her wedding (and ended up kicking off the uncomfortable heels she was wearing after an hour).
Having founded Calla shoes after being made redundant while pregnant, Jennifer’s mission was to provide women with bunions, or any foot problem putting 'normal' shoes out of reach, with the perfect blend of style and comfort, never compromising on either.
Years of research later, Calla was launched to the delight of women all over the world, and the comfort that our shoes provide is loved by customers in 90+ countries. For her role in empowering women, Jennifer was honoured with the Inspiring Woman Award in 2018.
She is passionate about changing the lives of women who suffer just like her, by taking existing designs and styles of on-trend shoes and modifying them so that they will fit comfortably.
Unlike regular wide fitting shoes, Calla footwear is wide in the toe box, but standard in the heel.
This allows us to provide you with additional width and volume where you need it most across your bunions, without having your heel pop out of the shoe.
We only source the softest, luxury leather and suede in Europe, to accommodate your lumps and bumps and ensure that there's no rubbing.
Jennifer spends months ensuring that all the shoes are carefully crafted to disguise bunions, with vamps coming up higher than in regular footwear, to ensure that your lumps and bumps are 'tucked in'.
Comfort is key, so we have made sure that each Calla shoe features a cushioned and arch supported insole, to support your foot.
To ensure the highest quality of materials and craftsmanship, all Calla shoes are handmade in the Porto region of Portugal.
We have a strong social media presence - please follow us on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook and take a look at our posts.
Calla has been recognised by the press as:
- ‘The Best (Actually Stylish) Shoes for Bunions, According to to Foot Experts’ by New York Magazine,
- Hailed as ‘Ideal for those with bunions’ by NetDoctor,
- Hello Magazine gave us the accolade of being one of the best wide fit shoes for comfort and cool
- Top Sante asked 'Were they comfy?' and answered with 'Extremely, as the shoes come up around the feet to cover and cushion the bunion'
- The Independent recognised us as one of the most comfortable shoes for women
- ‘Best stylish orthopaedic shoes for women’ by Evening Standard.
With many fans among celebrities and bloggers (Dane Helen Mirren, Tamzin Outhwaite, Tamera Mowry-Housley, Tamara Wall, Louise Minchin, Ria Hebden, Sara Davies, Amy Dowden, Bethany Kingsley-Garner, Sally Morgan, Angela Griffin, Dawn Gallagher, and Darcey Bussell), you may have started seeing our stylish shoes on the red carpet, too.
About Bunions
A bunion (medically known as hallux valgus) is a bony lump usually located at the base of the big toe. The lump is not actually new bone growth, but rather just the bone that is slowly being pushed outwards.
You may experience the following symptoms:
The main sign of a bunion is the big toe pointing towards the other toes on the same foot.
A swollen, bony bump on the outside edge of your foot
Pain and swelling around your big toe that's made worse by pressure from wearing shoes
Sore skin over the top of the bunion
Changes to the shape of your foot, making it difficult to find shoes that fit
Hard, callused and red skin caused by your big toe and second toe overlapping
If you have them then you know the lump can get quite sore, especially if you wear footwear which squeezes your toes.
Bunion severity scale
Bunions come in all different shapes and sizes.
You can take a look at the scale here: Bunions: What are Bunions and How do You Treat Them? (callashoes.co.uk)
Why do you get bunions?
The outward pushing of the bone to cause the lump has probably happened slowly over a number of years. For some this is due to the way the underside of your foot is shaped and therefore the way that has caused you to roll on to the inside of your feet when you walk (it’s called overpronation). This wonky walking has put pressure on the bone and caused a lump. In addition your big toe may have edged inwards to get a little cosier with your second toe and limit the overpronation.
Many of you can blame your family for your bunion as they are often hereditary and you are certainly not alone if you have them. Over 15 million people suffer from them in the UK and it’s estimated that around 30% of every Western country suffers from bunions.
Women are more prone to developing bunions than men as they are more likely to have squeezed their feet into ill-fitting high heel shoes and have made an existing condition worse. With prolonged wearing of constraining footwear your toes will adapt to the new position and lead to the deformity we know as a foot bunion.
It’s a fact that the older you get the more likely it is you will develop a bunion. In the UK 85% of the people who have bunions are women over 45, with the market size increasing with age.
Other causes are previous foot conditions such as sprains, fractures, nerve injuries, loose ligaments, and low muscle tone.
How to get rid of bunions?
The only treatment to correct bunions and make your big toes lovely and straight again is through surgery.
In the UK this can be carried out on the NHS but only if you are in considerable pain with your bunion. You will not be treated if you are getting the surgery done for cosmetic reasons. You can however of course go private for your care.
Going down the route of traditional bunion surgery needs careful consideration. Not to be done if you’re required to run around after young children, pets etc! It can take about 6 to 8 weeks to recover, during which time you’ll need to be completely off your feet and crutches will be required when moving around. There are less invasive methods including keyhole bunion surgery but you'll need to speak to your doctor and do your research to find what is right for you.
However, there’s no guarantee the surgery will be completely successful. Your bunions may come back and it doesn’t mean you will suddenly be able to totter around in your favourite Louboutins again. You’ll need to take extra special care of them in order to prevent them from reoccurring.
See below for home treatments for an alternative to surgery if you’re in pain.
Treatments for bunion pain that you can do at home
Here are home treatments that can the ease pain and discomfort of those pesky toe lumps:
After a long day of walking round the shops take non-prescription medicines such as ibuprofen or paracetamol, following the recommended dose, to help relieve bunion pain.
Elevate the foot to help reduce inflammation and get you other half to give you a nice foot massage with some soothing essential oils.
Grab yourself a pack of peas out the freezer and apply to the painful joint to ease pain.
You can buy orthotics, arch supports and bunion pads which will redistribute the weight, take the pressure off and protect the big toe. Take a look on Amazon to read the reviews on some different products to see which might work best for you.
If possible, use shoes with a wider fit or specifically designed for bunions so that the toes aren’t cramped. You shouldn’t wear heels often, especially ones with a tight toe box as there will be greater pressure on the toes.
Avoid activities that put excessive pressure on the foot, especially the big toe.
Choosing the right shoes for bunions
So you’ve got bunions and you don’t want them to get any worse. An important step to slow down or even prevent the worsening of bunions and the pain which can come with them is to wear well fitting shoes.
Wearing suitable, comfortable shoes can prevent irritation and strain on the bunion. If you’re a serial high heel shoe wearer, this is not good news. Comfortable and stylish don’t tend to go together. However Calla shoes for bunions can provide the solution for when only heels will do.
For every day wear, read on for some tips on choosing shoes that are best for bunions:
- When buying a new pair of shoes, make sure to allow around half an inch of allowance at the front and back of the shoe.
- It is best to fit shoes while standing. This will allow the foot to support your weight, spreading your feet.
- A good time to purchase shoes is during the end of the day. The feet are slightly larger in the evening than in the morning.
- Select a shoe with wide toe box. This is the area within the shoe where your toes are located. A spacious toe box provides more room between your toes, hence, decreases the chances of irritation to your bunion.
- In some cases, one foot tends to be larger than the other. In this case, go for the larger-sized foot, then purchase an insert to compensate for the smaller foot.
- Avoid patent leather shoes or any shoe that does not stretch, these shoes are terrible for bunions.
- It is important to re-measure your feet regularly. A bunion is a progressive condition, and unfortunately the size of a bunion can change over time.
The best bunion friendly shoes
Although high heels are considered a big no-no if you have bunions, there will be times when flat shoes just aren’t going to fit the bill. Weddings, christenings, the office Christmas party or even a romantic night out with your partner are all occasions when you will want to add an extra level of style and confidence to your outfit, and only heels will do.
If you still want to wear beautiful shoes for that special occasion then Calla shoes are your answer. Not recommended for striding to drop the kids or grandkids off at school, but definitely comfortable enough to get you through a night out with friends or your sister’s wedding. Designed with extra room to fit your bunions in comfortably and additional features like a breathable, padded insole you can be confident you’ll be able to dance the night away in a pair of beautiful heels.
Our range includes heels, trainers, boots, flats, and sandals. We also have a range for wide feet, and a wide toe box.
